Hi Joe

By the term, departmental Handbook, do you mean a handbook that the Head of Psychology has designed for the students? If so, I made my own. You're welcome to look at it if you think it would help (post back if interested)! If this isn't what you mean, then I'm afriad I can't help, as I (and I suspect other HoDs) just learned everything on the job.

Hope this post helps!

Dear Delegates,

Thank you very much to all those who attended the Uniview sponsored ATP workshops. Once again we would like to apologise to those delegates who were unable to attend the workshop, in particular those who had pre-booked for this slot. This workshop was extremely popular and we were not able to accommodate the number of delegates who attended this year in the space that we were provided with. We will take this into consideration when planning the workshop for 2011.

In the meantime, please find a link below to Dr Julia Russell's ATP PowerPoint presentation with printed activities to use in your classroom.

Here you can find monthly teaching downloads created by Dr Julia Russell.

Thank you very much for your continued support and we hope you that you enjoyed the conference and had a safe journey home.

Having just completed my probation year in Scotland as a PE teacher (assisting with Higher psychology), I have had years of training on CfE I feel there are many pros and cons.
The new structure allows for much more flexibility not only within own subjects and departments, but on a cross curricular level (with sciences and sports etc). Particularly when it comes to completing the coursework part of Higher Psychology.
With regards fitting in with the health and well being sector, I feel they have put psychology there to cover the mental well being which seems a bit daft is psychology is about more than just mental health issues.
Having currently moved back south of the border to teach psychology I feel safer having a set curriculum to follow as I like having that structure.

Particularly for teachers/FE lecturers in Scotland, I was wondering if anyone would like to share their views on the CforE changes which are just around the corner.

As I understand it, Higher Psychology will remain, Intermediate 2 will be replaced by a new National 5 course, and Intermediate 1 will be scrapped but partially replaced with a general Social Sciences National 4. It is likely that course content and assessment will change significantly (the new courses are published in 2012 to start teaching in 2013 for National and 2014 for Higher).

Also, Psychology (along with Sociology and Philosophy) have been put in the 'Health and Wellbeing' curriculum area - it is unclear what effect if any this will have on the new course content or skills.

Update on SQA progress with the new qualifications available here: http://www.sqa.org.uk/sqa/42233.2636.html

At the Annual ATP Conference there will be a fun regional competition at the wine reception. The aim is to get people networking with others from their areas. Hopefully, people will be inspired to keep in touch and work together. Virtual networking is undeniably convenient, but there is still a place for face to face collaboration over a sociable drink or two!

Information regarding QTS status is notoriously unreliable as it varies between different institutions. The most reliable route remains PGCE at a prestigious institution (e.g. Manc Met, Edgehill, Leicester, Keele, IOE, Wolverhampton, Canterbury etc. to name a few), this will give you QTS. Many people are looking for a GTP route for perfectly understandable financial reasons, however this may not lead to the best training. My advice would be to bite the bullet and get another year of student loan.

See the GTTR website for details. However, it is vitally important that you ensure the course you are applying for does give you QTS. Apply early and get some work experience before you start.

The information above is only partly correct.

PAID EMPLOYMENT DURING TRAINING:
This is only true for part-time trainees. After graduating, If you wish to complete a two-year diploma in teaching, it is a part-time course with the majority of your time on a paid placement with a subject mentor. Only then it is essential for you to be paid whilst you are assessed on the job by classroom observers, in order to gain your teaching qualification.

QTS Versus QTLS:
To teach Psychology in colleges at A' Level, you must hold a QTLS. To teach it at GCSE (fairly new to the UK compared to the US), your QTLS will not suffice. You need a QTS instead to work with any student younger than 16.

CONFUSION OF QTS & QTLS:
QTS holders have the added advantage of teaching Psychology at both secondary AND FE level. Unfortunately, QTLS holders are not equipped to jump between the age groups in this manner.

PGCE:
This is a generic course for anyone wishing to practice as a teacher. It fails to offer you QTLS or QTS unless the university (e.g. Edge Hill) specify it. Instead, prestigious Universities such as The Institute of Education (IOE) simply offer their PGCE as a stepping stone before the trainee uploads their own lesson plans on the IFL website for NQTs, in order to gain the QTLS or QTS qualification in their own time, after gaining employment.

Our printers have dispatched it and it should arrive this week but we are just making you aware that there may be difficulties as a result of this strike. These problems will be resolved asap.

Thank you for your understanding in these matters

Laura

Strictly speaking, shouldn't it be 11 types of people, those who can count in binary and those who can't...

Thanks for that, Mark.

Just thought I'd flag the BPS website for careers info too - obviously only relates to careers in psychology, but it's genuinely useful. It gives a proper insight into what each type of professional psychologist does in their jobs, and can help students to understand the realities (eg a forensic psychologist tends to work in prisons, and is not chasing criminals round the globe, Cracker style). It can be found at http://www.bps.org.uk/careers/careers_home.cfm.

On September 24th there was a live webchat on the Guardian website about careers in psychology.

I was sent the link on time from the guardian but still missed it. The archive is still live which could be a useful read for students wanting to study psychology at university or teachers wanting a career change. The webchat included contributions from psychologists working in a number of different professions.

Here is the link http://tinyurl.com/ybshcm5

Dear ATP Members, The newsletter team are currently gathering contributions for the new Division for Teachers and Researchers in Psychology (DTRP) bumper newsletter. This bi-annual issue will be showcasing achievements, issues, research etc at all levels of academia and will be disseminated across the UK. We would like to invite members to contribute to this first issue. If you feel this is something you would like to get involved in please contact us (dtrp@bps.org.uk). We are flexible regarding content, which can relate to activities at an individual staff member level or a department level. This could be an update on research, or discussion of an issue within the teaching of Psychology at your institute or at a particular level of education. We already have a number of contributions from tutors within Higher Education, however, our network has the advantage of representing tutors at all levels of academia and we would very much like our publication to represent these varied groups. Please pass this communication on to anyone you feel maybe interested. We look forward to hearing from you.

Hi This is extremeley diificultto do but after many hours of searching on the internet I managed to find Edge Hill University. I have been enrolled at Edge Hill university as they now offer have a PGCE psychology via distance and flexible learning. It gets you your QTS status at the end of it and with having a young child and working full time it has been the easiest option for me!!
